Transcochlear Approach to a Geniculate Ganglion Hemangioma and Reanastomosis of Facial Nerve

چکیده
We present a case of a rare skull base tumor treated via the transcochlear approach, followed by reanastomosis of the facial nerve. After extensive skull base resection, the tumor was successfully resected and the ends of the facial nerve re-anastomosed. In an evolving era where smaller approaches are favored, there remains a place for larger skull base approaches. Categories: Otolaryngology, Neurosurgery

A new entity in the differential diagnosis of geniculate ganglion tumours: fibrous connective tissue lesion of the facial nerve.
Differential diagnosis of geniculate ganglion tumours includes chiefly schwannomas, haemangiomas and meningiomas. We report the case of a patient whose clinical and imaging findings mimicked the presentation of a facial nerve schwannoma.Pathological studies revealed a lesion with nerve bundles unstructured by intense collagenisation. Consequently, it was called fibrous connective tissue lesion ...

We present five cases of patients diagnosed of a facial nerve tumoral lesion localised at the Geniculate Ganglion and all of which underwent surgical resection. The initial symptoms were in four cases of peripheral facial nerve paralysis and in the fifth case facial paresis. Two trans-mastoid extralabyrinthine approaches were performed and one through a combined path (middle fossa and trans-mas...

CONCLUSIONS Facial nerve preservation was related to tumor size, and the patients with facial nerve preservation obtained better recovery. Hence it is necessary to perform surgical removal as soon as possible. OBJECTIVE To study facial nerve preservation in patients with geniculate ganglion (GG) hemangiomas. METHODS Twelve patients who had GG hemangiomas were managed at a single institute. ...
متن کاملEndoscopically-assisted transmastoid approach to the geniculate ganglion and labyrinthine facial nerve
BACKGROUND Endoscopic transcanal approaches to the facial nerve allow excellent exposure of the tympanic facial nerve. This approach becomes limited when access is required to the more proximal geniculate ganglion and labyrinthine portion of the facial nerve. The aim of this report was to determine the feasibility of a transmastoid endoscopically assisted approach to the geniculate ganglion and...

A 19-year-old woman had three episodes of left facial paralysis, each with complete resolution. The initial computed tomographic (CT) scan was interpreted as normal (Fig 1A). The patient returned 1 year later with recurrent facial paralysis. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging showed a mass at the geniculate turn (Fig 1B). Retrospective review of the initial CT findings revealed expansion of the di...
